Edward Oughton, associate professor of geography and geoinformation science in the College of Science, was recently awarded two grants from the National Science Foundation for space weather prediction and non-terrestrial cybersecurity.

From constructing an artificial star to capturing a 25-year timelapse of a supernova, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ is pioneering space exploration, research, and collaboration. And our mission into the final frontier brings students along for the ride.

As the university’s Grand Challenge Initiative (GCI) enters its second year, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ today announced funding for seven catalyst research projects and the launch of the Grand Challenge Research Exchange—quarterly convenings for all GCI-related research to accelerate solutions to the grand challenge of our time.

Konrad Wessels, associate professor of geography and geoinformation science at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, is part of a NASA-funded team studying how ice levels and ecosystem carbon stock are changing—work that could impact climate resilience planning, disaster management, ocean navigation, and national security.

Jessye Gassel has always been fascinated with spinning bodies. Gassel found herself looking forward to her high school physics class every day and knew, by junior year, that she would pursue it in college. A senior-year astronomy class honed that direction toward astrophysics.

Connected DMV has announced that ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, one of the nation’s most innovative and fastest-growing public research universities, will serve as the Lead Academic Partner for spaceNEXT, the inaugural global convening focused on the commercialization of space and a flagship program of Connected DMV’s Potomac Center for the New Space Economy.

College of Engineering and Computing students are instrumental in building the payload for ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ's historic Landolt space mission.

Careers in space policy are lifting off. Aerospace veteran and Schar School graduate Hina Kazmi introduces a new course in space policy that takes graduate degrees to an elevated level in a burgeoning field of study.

¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ researcher Anamaria Berea was selected to serve on NASA's Decadal Astrobiology Research and Exploration Strategy (DARES) Task Force 1.

Mechanical engineering’s Jeffrey Moran continues to prepare an experiment to be carried out on the International Space Station (ISS). Via a powerful microscope in microgravity, the team plans to observe how common atmospheric aerosols move across a temperature gradient, information which would inform climate predictions, geoengineering proposals, and even HVAC applications.
